Portfolio

Over the years I've created websites for quite a variety of different clients and I'm happy to say that almost all of them are somehow making a positive contribution to the wellbeing of people, society or the planet.

Below I've provided some information about some of my favourite projects I've worked on in the last couple of years.

LifeShift

Andrew Ferguson wanted to redesign his site to enable him to sell a series of e-books about how to leave the rat race and set up your own ethical business that you can be passionate about.

I used Wordpress to create this site which is a really simple to use content management system, and although it was primarily designed as a blogging platform it is perfect to create any kind of simple website.

As well as the site design I also created the e-books for him which basically involved converting Word files into PDFs and designing a front cover in Photoshop. I was particularly pleased with how the book cover designs turned out.

The e-books are sold using Clickbank which is a low-cost service specifically designed to help people easily sell digital content online. I set-up Clickbank for Andrew.

Discovery Retreats

Tim Hunt of Discovery Retreats came to me in mid-2007 needing a simple web site to promote his two holistic retreat centres. One in Bantham, Devon, and the other in tropical Bali.

This was one of the first Joomla sites I created and I was pleased with the results. Joomla is a great open source content management system that enables you to easily log-in and update the site yourself.

Sally Lever

Sally contacted me in December 2008 for advice on improving her website. She was having trouble updating her site because of a very ineffective content management system and also much of her existing content was not well optimized for the search engines.

I suggested using Wordpress, a simple to use content management system, that is primarily designed as a blogging platform, however it is frequently used for simple websites that don't have a blog.

Sally writes regular articles on the subjects of downshifting and sustainable living so I suggested she make full use of the blogging features and to add each new article as a blog post.

The site was created in approximately one week and the new design was based on her existing colours and imagery such as the bowl of cherries.

The Beer Guru

Chris Street wanted a site through which to sell and promote his satirical spiritual book "The Beer Guru's Guide" as well as his popular T-shirts.

I suggest that rather than just have a simple promo site that it would be a good idea to keep the website fresh and up-to-date by blogging as The Beer Guru.

The website was built using Wordpress which enables Chris to easily log-in and publish new blogs whenever he feels the urge to write.

To sell the t-shirts we suggested using the popular print-on-demand service Spreadshirt.net

Dr Briffa

Dr John Briffa is one of the UK’s leading experts on natural health and nutrition. He’s had popular columns in the Daily Mail and Observer newspapers and his latest book True You Diet was published by Hay House in 2007.

In 2006 Dr Briffa decided he wanted a new website that would enable him to have a more effective online presence which he could use as a platform to sell digital products and also put more of his writing online.

I decided the best solution would be to set John up with a blog using the popular Wordpress Software. This enables John to easily add new articles in the form of blog posts.

Now, almost two years later John’s blog has become one of the most popular and highly regarded blogs on the subject of health and nutrition, and John recently published his 500th blog post.

Massage World

Massage World is the UK’s most popular magazine for massage and bodywork therapists. They needed a new website that could:

  • Enable people to subscribe to the magazine online
  • Provide a number of featured articles from the magazine
  • Easily add news and details of forthcoming events
  • A new membership site where they could sell access to their entire back catalog as PDF downloads.

Joomla proved to be the ideal solution. Using a combination of the core joomla software plus several freely available extensions I was able to create a website for less than a £1000 that not very long ago would easily have cost more than £10,000 to produce.

Giving a Click

Giving a Click, a new organisation that aims to connect people with their favourite charities, came to me in May 2008 needing a new website with several requirements:

  • They wanted to be able to update the website themselves and add new content.
  • They wanted to be able to easily add information about news and new events.
  • They wanted an online community where their members could connect with each other.

However, they were on a very tight budget. A few years ago it would have cost several thousand pounds or more to implement these kinds of features and that would have been way out of their budget.

Today, however, the Joomla content management system allowed me to quickly implement all these features at a price they could afford.
